Subpart A - General

Subpart A of CFR Title 49 Part 173 sets out the overarching rules that govern the transportation of hazardous materials. It defines key terms, establishes the scope of applicability, and outlines the basic requirements for classification, labeling, documentation and packaging that all hazardous-material shipments must meet. This general framework underpins the more detailed regulations found in the subsequent subparts.
