Early congenital syphilis, symptomatic
**Definition:** A disease affecting newborns or children up to 2 years of age, caused by an infection with the gram-negative bacteria Treponema pallidum pallidum in utero. This disease is characterised by premature birth, hepatosplenomegaly, skeletal abnormalities, and bullous skin disease. Transmission is by vertical transmission.
