Latent early syphilis
**Definition:** A disease caused by an infection with the gram-negative bacteria Treponema pallidum pallidum. This disease is characterised by serologic proof of infection without symptoms of disease less than 1 year after secondary syphilis. Transmission is commonly by sexual contact.
