**Definition:** A disease caused by an infection with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoA). This disease is characterised by severe acute respiratory illness with fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Confirmation is by identification of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus from genetic material.
