Vaccinia

**Definition:** A poxvirus which was formerly used to protect against smallpox. Its use as a vaccine can be complicated by a generalised rash secondary to viraemia, accidental infection of other sites or other individuals, progressive infection at the site of vaccination or, rarely, encephalomyelitis and myopericarditis.
