**Definition:** A disease of the skin and mucous membranes, caused by an infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2. This disease is characterised by vesicles, or may be asymptomatic. Transmission is by direct contact. Confirmation is by identification of herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2.
