Herpes simplex infection of central nervous system

**Definition:** A condition of the central nervous system, caused by an infection with herpes simplex virus (human herpesviruses 1 and 2). This condition is characterised by fever, headache, or other clinical symptoms depending on the site of infection. Confirmation is by identification of herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2.
