Foot and mouth disease

**Definition:** A rare infection in humans due to the Aphthovirus Foot-and-mouth-disease virus (FMDV), which is responsible for a highly contagious epidemic infection of cloven-hoofed animals, particularly cattle. It manifests in humans with prodromal fever and malaise followed by vesiculation and ulceration of oral mucous membranes and lips. Vesicles may sometimes involve the digits and palmoplantar skin.
