Malaria due to Plasmodium malariae
**Definition:** A disease caused by an infection with the protozoan parasite Plasmodium malariae. This disease is characterised by fever, chills, headache, nausea and vomiting, body aches, or general malaise. Transmission is through the bite of an infected mosquito. Confirmation is by identification of Plasmodium malariae in a blood sample.
**Long definition:** Malaria caused by Plasmodium malariae. The clinical manifestations (usually appearing 20-40 days after sporozoite inoculation) are similar to those of vivax malaria but the paroxysms of fever chills commonly occur at interval of three days. It may persist for life with or without recurrent febrile episodes.
**Exclusions:** - when mixed with Plasmodium falciparum - when mixed with Plasmodium vivax
