Rhodesiense trypanosomiasis
**Definition:** A disease caused by an infection with the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. This disease is characterised by a chancre at the site of the bite. This disease may also present with fever, headache, muscle and joint aches, or lymphadenopathy. Transmission is through the bite of an infected tsetse fly. Confirmation is by identification of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense in a blood sample, lymph node fluid, or biopsy of the chancre.
**Long definition:** East African or Rhodesian African trypanosomiasis, is a disease caused by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense which is transmitted to human hosts by bites of infected tsetse flies Glossina morsitans. East African trypanosomiasis is a zoonotic infection with animal vectors.
