Schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma japonicum
**Definition:** A disease caused by an infection with the parasitic worm Schistosoma japonicum. This disease is characterised by Katayama fever, hepatic perisinusoidal egg granulomas, Symmers’ pipe stem periportal fibrosis, or portal hypertension. This disease may also present with embolic egg granulomas in the brain or spinal cord. Transmission is by direct contact with freshwater that has been contaminated with Schistosoma japonicum eggs or snails that carry Schistosoma japonicum. Confirmation is by identification of the Schistosoma japonicum eggs in a faecal sample.
