Pediculosis

**Definition:** A condition of the skin, hair, or genital region caused by an infection with the parasite Pediculus. This disease is characterised by pruritus. This condition also presents with symptoms depending on the site of infection. Transmission is by direct or indirect contact with an infected individual or animal. Confirmation is by identification of Pediculus.

**Long definition:** Lice infestations are infections of the skin, hair, or genital region caused by lice living directly on the body or in hats or other garments. Lice are generally spread through direct contact with an infested person. There are three types; head lice, body lice, pubic lice.The most common symptom of infestation is pruritus (itching) on the head which normally intensifies 3 to 4 weeks after the initial infestation.
