Lactose intolerance
**Definition:** Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and some dairy products, due to a deficiency of lactase, the enzyme that metabolizes lactose. Lactose intolerance occurs when lactose is not completely broken down and consequently the sugar cannot be absorbed into the blood.
