**Definition:** All definitional requirements for delirium are met. There is evidence from history, physical examination, or laboratory findings that the delirium is caused by the direct physiological effects of a substance or medication (including withdrawal). If the specific substance inducing the delirium has been identified, it should be classified using the appropriate subcategory (e.g., alcohol-induced delirium).
