Nightmare disorder

**Definition:** Nightmare disorder is characterised by recurrent, vivid and highly dysphoric dreams, often involving threat to the individual, that generally occur during REM sleep and that often result in awakening with anxiety. The person is rapidly oriented and alert upon awakening.
