Inflammatory bowel diseases

**Definition:** Inflammatory bowel disease is a group of inflammatory conditions of the intestine of unknown aetiology. Regarding its pathogenesis, it is hypothesized that the mucosal immune system shows an aberrant response towards luminal antigens such as dietary factors and commensal microbiota in genetically susceptible individuals.
