Retropharyngeal or parapharyngeal abscess

**Definition:** A retropharyngeal abscess is an abscess located in the tissues in the back of the throat behind the posterior pharyngeal wall (the retropharyngeal space). A parapharyngeal abscess is an abscess developing in the potential space in the head and the neck.

**Exclusions:** - Peritonsillar abscess
