**Definition:** Inflammation of the tongue

**Long definition:** Glossitis is a condition in which the tongue is swollen and changes color. Finger-like projections on the surface of the tongue (called papillae) are lost, causing the tongue to appear smooth.

**Exclusions:** - atrophic glossitis
