Asteatotic eczema
**Definition:** Asteatotic eczema develops from asteatosis cutis. In the latter cracking and crazing of the epidermal stratum corneum produces a flaky skin with a reticulate erythema beneath the scales. It occurs particularly on the lower legs. It is more common in the elderly and is provoked by a combination of defatting and desiccation of the epidermis. If inflammation progresses then it may become more pruritic and eczematous, asteatotic eczema.
