Irritant contact dermatitis due to solvents

**Definition:** Irritant contact dermatitis caused by skin contact with solvents such as tetrachloroethylene, toluene, turpentine, acetone, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, hexane, citrus terpenes or ethanol. These have numerous uses including in dry-cleaning chemicals, paint thinners, nail polish removers, glue solvents and perfumes. Occupations where there are substantial risks include painters and decorators, construction workers, dry-cleaners, machinists and workers in the chemical industry.
