Premature ovarian failure

**Definition:** Menopause occurring spontaneously before 40 years of age, generally resulting in secondary amenorrhea although some women may exhibit intermittent ovarian function and ovulation, with a minority conceiving and delivering a pregnancy. POF/POI occurs mostly without a known cause, but can be caused by the following conditions: numerical and structural chromosomal abnormalities, Fragile X (FMR1) premutations, autoimmune disorders, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, galactosemia, and other rare enzyme defects or mutations. To be subdivided in 4 categories according to cause: congenital, acquired, iatrogenic and unknown

**Exclusions:** - Isolated gonadotropin deficiency - Postprocedural ovarian failure
