Retained portions of placenta or membranes, without haemorrhage

**Definition:** A condition characterised by portions of a placenta and membranes that have not been expelled from the uterus during the third stage of labour and up to 30 minutes following delivery, and without haemorrhage. This condition is caused by uterine atony, a trapped placenta, or a placenta accreta. This condition may lead to primary postpartum haemorrhage or infection.
