Obstetric air embolism
**Definition:** A condition characterised by the lodging of a gas bubble (air embolus) in the bloodstream, which can cause a blockage associated with the physiological and other changes that occur during the period of time from conception to delivery (pregnancy), during labour and delivery (childbirth) or during the approximately six weeks after delivery during which the uterus returns to the original size (puerperium).
