**Definition:** Neonatal purpura fulminans is a potentially lethal disorder characterised by progressive haemorrhagic necrosis of the skin associated with cutaneous vascular thrombosis. It is usually due to a genetically transmitted thrombophilic disorder: most commonly homozygous deficiency of protein C or, less frequently, protein S.
