Respiratory instability of prematurity

**Definition:** Infant within the neonatal period who requires continued respiratory life support, including positive pressure ventilation and/or prolonged oxygen therapy, without a clear pathologic diagnosis. This may be caused by inadequate respiratory muscle strength, excessive chest wall compliance, and/or inadequate CNS respiratory drive.
