Ascites

**Definition:** Accumulation or retention of free fluid in the abdominal peritoneal cavity between the tissues lining the abdomen and abdominal organs. The fluid may be serous, haemorrhagic, or the result of inflammation or tumour metastasis to the peritoneum.
