Oedema due to increased capillary pressure

**Definition:** Increased capillary pressure increases the leakage of fluid from the vascular compartment to the interstitial tissues, resulting in oedema. Causes include impaired or obstructed venous return (fluid overload, venous thrombosis, right heart failure, venous compression from tumour tissue), increased blood flow (physiological response to heat exposure, arteriovenous malformations, disturbed cutaneous vasomotor control due to drug or autonomic neuropathy), or reduced plasma oncotic pressure due to hypoproteinaemia.
