Code Z in the JEL system is a catch-all category for economic research that does not fit the other defined fields, encompassing interdisciplinary work, methodological innovations, historical analyses, policy-oriented studies, and any special topics that fall outside the standard classifications. It is used when no more specific code accurately describes the paper's primary focus.
