**Definition:** A species of Bacteroides that is a major constituent of the human GUT MICROBIOTA. It normally produces enzymes important for the digestion of vegetable matter. However, it can also cause OPPORTUNISTIC INFECTIONS that result in intra-abdominal SEPSIS; BACTEREMIA; and PERITONITIS.
