**Definition:** A highly-conserved family of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors. They function as dimers with other bHLH proteins and bind E-BOX ELEMENTS to control gene expression during EMBRYOGENESIS and the EPITHELIAL-MESENCHYMAL TRANSITION.
