**Definition:** The outermost cell envelope of GRAM-NEGATIVE BACTERIA composed of PHOSPHOLIPIDS; LIPOPOLYSACCHARIDES (LPS), and BACTERIAL OUTER MEMBRANE PROTEINS. The bacterial outer membrane LPS demonstrates cytotoxicity (see LIPID A and BACTERIAL O ANTIGEN).
