**Definition:** Traits developed in plants that help them avoid being used as host plants or food sources; or to tolerate and recover from HERBIVORY. Traits may be mechanical or chemical such as those that affect accessibility (thorns, thick husks, etc.), attractiveness to herbivore (odor, color, texture, etc.), digestibility (toxins, lignins, etc.), and movement in response to touch.
