**Definition:** An increase in SKELETAL MUSCLE mass in normal muscle development. In human adults it results primarily from an increase in the size of SKELETAL MUSCLE FIBERS unlike in muscle hyperplasia where an increase in the number of skeletal muscle fibers is a major factor.
