**Definition:** A genus of intracellular, gram-negative obligate bacteria belonging to the family RICKETTSIACEAE and the phylum PROTEOBACTERIA. This genus also includes ORIENTIA TSUTSUGAMUSHI which is a known cause of SCRUB TYPHUS transmitted to humans by various TROMBICULID MITES.
