Rhamnogalacturonans

**Definition:** Types of polysaccharides that are components of the plant cell wall pectin matrix. Rhamnogalacturonan I is characterized by a backbone of the repeating disaccharide (4)-alpha-D-galacturonic acid-(1,2)-alpha-L-rhamnose-(1,-) with many of the rhamnose residues substituted at C-4 with side chains of various neutral sugars linked together in various ways. Rhamnogalacturonan II type is complex, highly branched polysaccharide where the backbone consists exclusively of D-galacturonic acid units.
