**Definition:** Bilayer lipid membrane acquired by VIRAL PARTICLES during VIRAL MORPHOGENESIS. Although the LIPIDS of the viral envelope are host derived, various virus-encoded INTEGRAL MEMBRANE PROTEINS, i.e. VIRAL ENVELOPE PROTEINS are incorporated there.
