**Definition:** Progressive deterioration of T-cell function due to chronic antigen stimulation and inflammatory signals, e.g., CHRONIC INFECTION and CANCER. T-cell exhaustion is characterized by weakened immune system, e.g., dysfunctional MEMORY T CELLS differentiation and EPIGENETIC REPRESSION of IMMUNOLOGIC MEMORY effector functions.
