Perineuronal Nets

**Definition:** Meshwork of extracellular matrix containing CHONDROITIN SULFATE PROTEOGLYCANS structures interposed among glial processes. Perineuronal nets (PNN) surround the soma and dendrites of certain neuronal cell types, e.g., inhibitory GABAergic PARVALBUMIN-positive INTERNEURONS. PNN plays a role in NEURONAL PLASTICITY and may modulate memory.
