**Definition:** The specific patterns of changes made to HISTONES, that are involved in assembly, maintenance, and alteration of chromatin structural states (such as EUCHROMATIN and HETEROCHROMATIN). The changes are made by various histone modification processes that include ACETYLATION; METHYLATION; PHOSPHORYLATION; and UBIQUITINATION.
