**Definition:** A recombinant form of the endogenous cytokine human interferon (IFN) gamma-1b, with immunomodulating activity. Upon administration, IFN gamma-1b targets, binds to, and activates the cell-surface IFN-gamma receptor, stimulating antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC), activating natural killer (NK) cells, and enhancing the oxidative metabolism of macrophages. IFN-gamma plays important roles in the innate and adaptive immune responses.
