**Definition:** Human KRT18 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 12q13 and is approximately 4 kb in length. This allele, which encodes keratin, type I cytoskeletal 18 protein, is involved in both the negative regulation of apoptosis and intermediate filament structure. Mutations in the gene are associated with cryptogenic cirrhosis.
