Peptoniphilus harei

**Semantic type:** Bacterium

**Definition:** A species of obligately anaerobic, Gram-positive, cocci shaped bacteria arranged in pairs, short chains, tetrads or small clusters, in the phylum Firmicutes. This species is nonmotile, non-spore forming, indole positive, produce butyric acid and gas in peptone yeast extract medium with glucose, negative for urease and nitrate reduction, produces coagulase, and does not ferment carbohydrates. P. harei is an opportunistic pathogen and has been isolated from antral washout specimens, pus from the peritoneal cavity, infected sacral sores, and abscesses of the face, neck, breast, and thigh.
