**Definition:** A species of strictly anaerobic, Gram negative, pigment-producing, rod shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Bacteroidetes. This bacteria is non-motile, non-spore forming, bile-resistant, indole positive, catalase negative, hydrolyzes esculin, and does not reduce nitrate. A. shahii is a commensal organism of the human gastrointestinal tract.
