**Definition:** A sentinel hypoxic event occurring during labor, with evidence of fetal metabolic acidosis in the fetal umbilical arterial blood; a sudden and sustained fetal bradycardia or the absence of fetal heart rate variability in the presence of persistent, late, or variable decelerations (category III tracing); previously normal Apgar scores that are 0-3 beyond 5 minutes.
