**Definition:** The identification and quantification of oxidized polyunsaturated fatty acids (oxylipins) in a biospecimen. In humans, the oxidized products are usually eicosanoids and the enzymes that produce specific eicosanoids are well characterized. Therefore, the oxylipin profile can indirectly identify the fatty acid oxidizing enzymes that are active in the sample.
