Balamuthia mandrillaris

**Definition:** A species of free-living amoeba in the family Balamuthiidae. B. mandrillaris is the causative agent of granulomatous amoebic encephalitis. It was isolated from the brain of a captive baboon and has not been definitively isolated in nature.
