Echinococcus granulosus

**Semantic type:** Animal

**Definition:** A species of cyclophyllid tapeworms in the family Taeniidae. The lifecycle for E. granulosus involves ungulates as the intermediate host and canids as the definitive host. Infestation causes cystic echinococcosis. Humans are not a natural host of the parasite, but in very rare cases can be infected by ingesting eggs from canid feces.
