Leishmania donovani

**Definition:** A species of parasitic trypanosomatid protozoa in the family Trypanosomatidae. L. donovani causes both visceral and dermal leishmaniasis. This species is the primary cause of visceral leishmaniasis in the Indian subcontinent and East Africa.
