Naegleria fowleri

**Definition:** A species of parasitic amoeba in the family Vahlkampfiidae. N. fowleri is the only species of Naegleria that infects humans. Infection occurs through the nose and causes a very rare, but severe, infection of the brain called primary amoebic meningoencephalitis.
