Shewanella algae

**Semantic type:** Bacterium

**Definition:** A species of Gram negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium in the family Shewanellaceae. This species is motile with a single polar flagellum. S. algae is found in warm marine environments throughout the world and is known to cause peritonitis, obstructive pneumonia, ear infections, bacteremia, and infections of skin, soft tissue, bone, and joints.
